Message from Julio Cardoso Diretor/Coordenador Projeto Baleia a Vista:

"The first humpbacks were seen last april 16th and since then we have seen mainly juveniles humpbacks almost everyday and in a growing number every day and some are very actives (breaching, tail slapping) just in the areas of shipping routing.

We have call alert system (whales inside the channel) about 2 or 3 times per week since then.

The São Sebastião Port, the Tebar (Oil Terminal) and the Ferryboats are working very well with us and we have zero accidents so far.

So far just here and less than 3-5Nm from the coast or less we have seen 62 juvenile humpback whales since april 16th, and from this total 31 in the last 5 days!

The juvenile humpback population (BSA-South Atlantic) in our region are from 7,5m to 11,2m lenght (smaller than 7,5m are calfs and larger are adults). Those are the ones with 2 to 4 years of age (teenagers) very energetic, curious and like to stay around very close to the coast looking for food as they do not have the same capacity to support large periods of fasting/not feeding as the large adults have."
