#MeetTheTeam: Hélène Smidt

After graduating as a Business Engineer from the University of Antwerp, Hélène began her professional career as a business analyst at a software company. In 2019, she transitioned to the maritime industry, joining the Royal Belgian Shipowners’ Association (KBRV).

Following a presentation by Whale Guardians co-founder Capt. Michael Barbaix in 2022, she became convinced of the urgent need to take action to minimize ship strikes.

Recognizing that regulatory action through the International Maritime Organization (IMO) could take another decade, KBRV launched the #MakeWayForWhales campaign to raise awareness.

Since then, Hélène has primarily served as a liaison with the maritime industry and later also took on the role of marketing and communications lead.

Hélène joined the Whale Guardians team because it brings together her three passions: animal welfare, innovation, and networking.

In her free time, she enjoys spending summer days in the garden with a glass of wine, watching over her cats and chickens. A true “sporty spice,” she stays active with a mix of HIIT, yoga, running, and cycling.
